Free Checklist
Florida paperwork is simple if you have the right documents ready. Here is everything, including what to do when something is missing.
Vehicle title (if you have it)
The single most useful document. It should be in your name with no liens listed. If the title has a lienholder shown, you will also need a lien release.
Valid photo ID
Driver license or state ID. The name should match the title. If it does not, be ready to explain, for example a name change or an inherited car.
Lien release (if a loan was paid off)
If you paid off the car but the title still shows a lienholder, get a lien satisfaction letter from the lender. The FLHSMV can also confirm release electronically.
Bill of sale
We bring one, but having your own does not hurt. It should list buyer, seller, VIN, price and date. Both parties sign.
Notice of Sale (HSMV 82050)
File online with the FLHSMV the day you sell. This ends your liability for anything the car does after it leaves your hands.
Registration (helpful, not required)
If you have it, bring it. It confirms the VIN and your ownership and speeds things up.
Power of attorney (if selling for someone else)
Florida form HSMV 82995 lets you sign for an owner who cannot be present, common with inherited cars or elderly parents.
Death certificate and will (inherited cars)
If the owner passed away, these establish your right to sell. Probate requirements vary, call us at 954-787-5717 and we will tell you what applies.
