Liens, Explained Plainly
When a lender finances your car, they hold a lien on the title. That means you cannot transfer clean ownership until the loan is satisfied. In a normal private sale, the buyer pays the lender directly for the payoff amount, the lender releases the title, and any leftover money goes to you. Dealerships do this every day on trade-ins. The process is standard; what varies is whether the numbers work. If you owe more than the car is worth, you would need to cover the difference. If you owe less, you pocket the rest. Before any of that matters, though, you need a buyer willing to work with lien situations at all.
We do not buy vehicles with active liens or loans as a general policy, because the title cannot transfer cleanly while a lender still has a claim. There is one important exception. If your lien is from 2022 or earlier, meaning the loan is at least four years old, call us at (954) 787-5717. Older liens are frequently close to paid off or have workable balances, and we review each one individually. When you call, have your lender's name and your best estimate of the remaining balance ready. We will tell you quickly whether we can make it work.
To evaluate a lien situation, we need four things. First, the lender's name and your account details so we can verify the lien. Second, the payoff amount: what it would take to clear the loan today, which is different from your remaining balance because of interest timing. Third, the car's details: year, make, model, and condition, so we can make our offer. Fourth, your ID and any title paperwork you hold. With those four pieces, we can usually give you a yes or no on the same call, along with the exact numbers.
If your loan started after 2022, we cannot buy the car under our current policy, and we will tell you that directly rather than string you along. Your best options are usually selling to a dealership as a trade-in, where they handle payoffs routinely, or paying down the loan until the numbers work. You are still welcome to call us for a straight answer about your situation. An honest no costs you nothing.
